Underfloor Insulation

Are your ground floor wooden suspended floors cold and draughty? Installing underfloor insulation will eradicate draughts, reduce your heating bills and make your home warmer.

Wooden suspended floors in many homes are often poorly insulated and this can make ground floor rooms cold and susceptible to draughts.  The issue is often worse in older homes, particularly where flooring has been removed to expose the original floorboards.  EDF estimate that heat loss through poorly insulated floors can be as much as 20%. Installing underfloor insulation to the ground floor of you home will reduce draughts, reduce thermal losses, make your home warmer and more comfortable and crucially, reduce your heating bills.

By removing a small number of floorboards or gaining access via a basement, we can access the underside of suspended floors with minimal disruption and mess.  Once we have access, a minimum void height of 460mm is required for access, we install fibre insulation between the floor joists to block draughts and improve thermal performance.  To finish, we attach wire mesh to the underside of the joists to support the insulation and prevent rodents from nesting, although it should be noted that this is a ‘belt and braces’ measure.

The fibre insulation we install is odourless, will not rot, is non-hygroscopic, does not sustain rodents and prevents the growth of mould and fungi.  Importantly, this method of insulating the underside of a suspended floor does not impede crucial airflow and ventilation below.  Blocking air bricks or impeding ventilation can cause damp and rot and we strongly advise against any insulation methods that do this.
